Akaka Holding Senate Hearing on Federal Recognition
U.S. Sen. Dan Akaka has announced he’s holding a hearing Thursday to “examine the process of recognizing tribes through the Administrative and Congressional processes.”
The hearing starts at 8:15 a.m. Hawaii time and can be watched here.
Witnesses include:
- Bryan Newland, Senior Policy Advisor to the Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior
- Stephen R. Adkins, Chief, Chickahominy Indian Tribe
- Paul Brooks, Chairman, Lumbee Tribe
- John Norwood, Co-Chair, National Congress of American Indian Taskforce on Federal Acknowledgment
- K. Jerome Gottschalk, Staff Attorney, Native American Rights Fund
- Michael J. Anderson, Owner, Anderson Indian Law
