Hannemann Reiterates Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage

President Barack Obama's revelation that he supports same-sex marriage led several prominent Democratic Hawaii officials and candidates to do the same. But former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, a Democrat who’s running for Congress, told DC808 he still believes “marriage is between a man and a woman.”

Here’s his complete email:

As I have said before, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. However, I also believe that the decisions of the states which have permitted same-sex marriage and/or civil unions, such as Hawaii, should be respected, and I would oppose efforts at the federal level to override those states’ decisions.”

Three of his opponents in the 2nd Congressional District race — Tulsi Gabbard, Esther Kiaaina and Bob Marx — told Civil Beat yesterday that they support same-sex marriage. For Marx, the position was a shift on his stance earlier this year. Gabbard, too, says she has changed her mind on the issue.
