Defense Department Moving 9,000 Marines From Okinawa

After an Gov. Neil Abercrombie indicated earlier this week that 2,700 Marines are relocating from Okinawa, Japan, to Hawaii, the Defense Department on Thursday night announced it’s moving a total of 9,000 Marines from Okinawa to Hawaii, Guam and other islands in the Pacific.

A spokesman for Sen. Daniel Inouye tells DC808 the senator will likely release a statement about the deal on Friday. 

About 10,000 Marines will remain in Okinawa, according to the Defense Department. Read more about the shift from the American Forces Press Service
