After an Gov. Neil Abercrombie indicated earlier this week that 2,700 Marines are relocating from Okinawa, Japan, to Hawaii, the Defense Department on Thursday night announced it’s moving a total of 9,000 Marines from Okinawa to Hawaii, Guam and other islands in the Pacific.
A spokesman for Sen. Daniel Inouye tells DC808 the senator will likely release a statement about the deal on Friday.
About 10,000 Marines will remain in Okinawa, according to the Defense Department. Read more about the shift from the American Forces Press Service.
